English Department

This course consists of a variety of literatures geared to the interests and basic literary terms to their reading. Reading and thinking skills are stressed and examined in the material covered. Supplementary reading deals with the theme of children making important decisions.

Literature 7 AB

Students in this course are exposed to the various genres of literature. Novels are read as a supplement to the anthology. Students are taught a variety of literary terms and learn to recognize them in the works. There is a special emphasis on the techniques for writing essays.

A literature based English course emphasizing A literature based English course emphasizing reading from diverse sources in order to increase appreciation and understanding of both contemporary and classical poets and authors. Writing skills, speaking skills, story telling and letter writing are among the many exercises constructed around works of poetry and literature.

An introductory course analyzing literature of many genres. Students read literature from various countries and literary periods and develop their skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in connection with literature they read. This course teaches the stages of the writing process through a systematic approach so those students understand the underlying concepts.

This course introduces students to major themes in world literature across the centuries with reading from many countries and diverse cultures. It encourages free voluntary reading and the development of critical thinking skills with an emphasis on the emergence of a student's own voice through the critical essay.

US Literature AB
5-10 Units

This course surveys American literature appropriate to the interests and needs of upper-division students. It is a chronological study examining major authors, periods, and forms and works in American literature. Lectures and group discussions prepare students for literature based composition assignments and the expository essay.

A course analyzing literature of many genres. Students read literature from various periods throughout British history. They are given the opportunity to develop skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in connection with the literature. The students will be instructed in the stages of the writing process through a systematic approach in order to understand the underlying concepts.

Developments of writing skills for non-native speakers. Includes punctuation, complex sentence structure and vocabulary development, and writing of paragraphs and short essays.

An English course for non-native speakers designed to prepare students for success in regular college preparatory courses. Skills progress from speaking and listening skills to grammar, reading and writing

ESL- Advanced
5-10 Units

An English course designed to instruct non-native English speakers in fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, rhetoric, writing, and listening skills in the English language. The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the mainstream high school English courses.
