Science students should read and think critically

RHP students learn through hands-on activities exactly what it means to think critically. From current medical articles to interactive computer simulations, students learn exactly what it means to be a true scientist. The scientific method is key in assessing and analyzing different aspects of our diverse curriculum. Students perform rigorous scientific investigations in our advanced course of real life situations, including the design and implementation of their own experiments.

Science students should communicate clearly and effectively.

Part of the effectiveness of a scientist is the ability to communicate ideas with the general public. This is explored through a number of presentations throughout the department and is implemented through research papers, project display boards and Power Point presentations.

Science students should demonstrate personal, moral and social responsibility.

It is the responsibility of this department to instill certain fundamental principles into its students through cause and effect scenarios pertinent to today's society. In the realm of health and nutrition, topics include a lengthy study of the moral, social and personal implications of the reproductive system. A discussion of abstinence and the issues of AIDS and abortion are also explored. Environmental issues are also noted along with a basic evaluation of scientific etiquette.

Science students should value teamwork through participation.

Lab reports and group activities are vital to our curriculum. Students must learn to cooperate amongst each other in order to succeed. Many presentations are done in a group atmosphere to promote the idea of teamwork. Tasks are divided amongst the students so each team member plays an instrumental role in their group.

Science students should develop skills to be lifelong learners.

The science curriculum is designed to enthuse the young mind and to capture the hearts of the outgoing. It is a medium in which students can learn to excel and appreciate the world around them. Our goal is to make students avid readers who want to learn more. Various magazine and Internet articles are mingled into the curriculum to expose students to the world around them and to spark interest in aspects outside the classroom. For those who struggle through science courses the idea of pushing themselves and succeeding despite the adversities is also a tool that they will use in future endeavors.
